2013 OAUSA Summer Fest and Field Day sticky icon

OAUSA will hold it's annual Summer Fest and Field Day event on June 21-23, 2013, at the McGill Campground in the Los Padres National Forest.  The campground is located about an hours drive north of Los Angeles.

This will be a family event involving three days of camping in the mountains (elevation 7500 feet), an official ARRL Field Day competition, and several trail runs.  We will also offer all levels of Amateur Radio license testing on Sunday.

For those who want to explore the area, there are hundreds of miles of off pavement trails, including some of the more challenging, (Miller Jeep Trail).

The camp site is accessible by 2WD and all vehicles are welcome.

FEATURED OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

Anza Borrego Desert State Park / Carrizo Gorge

In the late 1800's and early 1900s, there was an increasing need for freight and passenger railroad service from Yuma, Arizona to San Diego, California.  In 1907, the San Diego & Eastern Railroad Company broke ground to build this route.

Many called it "the impossible railroad", due almost entirely to the extraordinary terrain, through an area called the Carrizo Gorge. Near the southern edge of the Anza Borrego Desert State Park is the Carrizo Gorge and today the remants of the railroad are there for the adventurer to explore.  One of the many highlights of the route are the tunnels and tressles that were built over 100 years ago and which were still in use recently.

Also stananding is the abandoned railroad camp, used to support construction of the RR.  Old blasting powder cans are still present, slowly rusting away.  A great way to step back in time.
